Mussels are able to synthetize sticky filaments in sea water. This glue sticks firmly to the rocks.

In the health sector, for professor Robert Sader, head of the project, the challenge of this adhesive would go beyond dental care: “If it works, we could be able to cardiac valve instead of stiching them up”.


In architecture, Columbia Forest Products developed a new glue, inspired from blue mussels that stick to rock in coastal areas. They were able to make a very water-resistant plywood, without any formaldehyde, a very toxic substance.
